Joel is a leading consultant and educator in the field of culture change, assisting many of Australia’s leading organisations to create rapid, lasting cultural change to realise their strategic business goals.

Joel draws on his experience as a lawyer, his background in psychology, his empirical research into the field of dispute resolution and almost a decade of experience helping many thousands of people to develop their capacity to negotiate, influence and communicate more effectively.

Areas of expertise

Joel applies his expertise across a range of contexts:

• Helping organisations to develop business strategy;
• Acting as an in-house change agent, implementing strategic change through cutting edge change management practices.
• Advising organistions on how to create high performance cultures, including introducing performance management systems.
• Developing critical leadership skills, including negotiation, influencing, communication, conflict resolution and collaboration skills.
• Lecturing negotiation and mediation subjects within the Monash University Law Faculty – at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Mediating workplace and commercial disputes.

Past experience

Joel completed his law degree with Honours, and a major in Psychology, at Monash University.

After a brief stint as a commercial and property lawyer with Melton Law Offices, in 2000 Joeldecided to explore less adversarial means of resolving disputes, commencing a major empiricalresearch project with Monash University and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal(VCAT). His research focused on the role of the lawyer in mediation - and inspired a life-longdesire to help people to collaborate and work together more effectively.

Shortly after, Joel joined CMA Learning Group – a leading skills development company withties to the Harvard Negotiation Project - the world’s leading ‘think tank’ on negotiation, influenceand communication. As a Senior Consultant with CMA, Joel regularly conducted developmentprograms on negotiation, conflict management and influential communication for some ofAustralia’s leading commercial and government organisations, as well consulting toorganisations around creating high performance cultures.

Since 2002, Joel has also lectured negotiation and mediation subjects within the MonashUniversity Law Faculty, teaching final year law students and Masters Level students skills forcreating high value outcomes in the their most difficult negotiations and disputes.

Joel also tries to give back to the broader community, providing pro-bono mediation services tothe Monash-Oakley legal service, as well as pro-bono seminars to various community groups.
